Great Rift Valley
Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,890m), meaning "Mountain of God" in the Maasai language, is Tanzania's only active volcano. It rises dramatically from the Great Rift Valley floor, overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Natron near the Kenyan border.
Standing approximately 240 kilometers northwest of Arusha, this sacred volcano offers adventurous climbers a truly unique trekking experience. The ascent takes roughly six hours and rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramic views of the Rift Valley escarpment, volcanic craters, and the Ngorongoro highlands. Due to its active volcanic nature, the mountain is closed to climbers during periods of eruption.

Highlights
Begin the climb before dawn to reach the summit by sunrise. The trail crosses surreal volcanic terrain with natrocarbonatite lava flows, the coolest temperature lava in the world, appearing black instead of red.
From the summit, gaze down at Lake Natron — the shallow soda lake that shimmers below. The contrast of the deep blue lake against the parched Rift Valley floor is unforgettable.
Lake Natron is the world's most important breeding ground for Lesser Flamingos, hosting 75% of the global population. The lake's high alkalinity and temperatures over 40°C create a natural barrier against predators.
The summit offers an extraordinary vantage point over the western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, with sweeping views stretching into Kenya and across the Ngorongoro highlands.
The terrain around Ol Doinyo Lengai is often described as otherworldly — a desolate, almost lunar landscape of ash cones, lava caves, and mineral deposits that feels like stepping onto another planet.
Explore the area around Lake Natron with guided walks to streams and waterfalls along the nearby escarpment. The stark beauty of this remote region is perfect for adventurous travelers seeking the road less traveled.
